BARCELONA – We found my favorite tapas spot in the city thanks to Anthony Bourdain. Today, we went back to Quimet & Quimet for lunch and souvenirs.

I loved these mejillones topped with caviar, over crunchy toast and tomato paste.

I know I will have cravings for the seafood tapas at this tiny, standing-room only food spot near the Espanya metro stop. We got lucky with today’s lunch crowd. Only a hand full of people at the bar, sipping cerveza and nibbling on gourmet small bites.

#kvpaz Last February, my first grader worked on a group research project about the American flag. He did all of the talking for this group’s presentation. His group learned that Betsy Ross made the first flag and that it was a symbol of freedom and justice.
His mommy was also studying the American flag as part of the Arizona Youth Identity Project. I joined the research study in Summer 2021, interviewing participants about their identities, COVID-19, and the first 100 days of President Biden’s work and administration.

I worked with @dr.emirestrada and analyzed 144 photovoice submissions and interview data for these prompts:
What does it mean to be American?
Show something that represents acting American.
Show something that makes you feel like an outsider.

Many participants shared images of the American flag, voting stickers, and modified flags. Some participants reacted differently to the American flag, especially after the 2016 presidential election and the January 6 insurrection.

This analysis led to conference presentations. Then, our research group worked on revising those presentations into a journal article.

🥃 I started with a smooth bourbon Old Fashion. In addition to the restaurant week menu, we also added on the crispy rice with ahi tuna. Very tasty!

🍚🦪 For our appetizers: hubby went for the voodoo fried rice with shrimp, chicken, gochujang and peas. I had three Sweet Jesus oysters.

🐟🍤 I loved my Sea of Cortez shrimp scampi risotto. Hubby had the fresh fish of te day - fried John Dory.

🍦 We ended with scoops fo gelato - vanilla and pistachio. They served it with a chewy chocolate chip cookie.

#kvpsf Throwback to a few more scenes from our Bay Area trip. I loved being back in the Bay Area for a @sfgiants game. Oracle Park is one of my favorite ballparks - right by the Bay and decent food.

I finally visited the Coco Cola slide with my kid. There was a line, but eventually, my kid enjoyed going down the slide.

On our last morning, we stopped by Bayside Cafe in Sausalito for breakfast. My kid and I also checked out the adorable houseboats.

🍕 @tonyspizza415 was also at the game. So I had to get a pepperoni slice. Yes, I still had room in my belly. Don’t worry about it.

🍗🍚 Finally - ordered Puerto Rican food boxes from @solfoodca in downtown Petaluma. Loved the classic pairing of chicken, rice, and plantains. Also loved the roast pork and piegon peas.

🥂 We did a tasting at @breathlesswines. The sisters who own this boutique sparkling wine spot named it for their mother, who taught them that every breath is a precious gift. It was lovely to follow in the footsteps of our dear friend Steve, who celebrated his 50th birthday here with a sabrage experience—literally using a saber to open a bottle of sparkling wine.

🛵 The vintage Vespa is perfect for photos. A few years ago, they posted a Facebook video of the Vespa scooting around wine country.

🥧🍦 Also loved @noblefolk ice cream and pie bar. We picked up berry ice cream and a strawberry pie. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking, picking up a pint when we had a 40-minute drive back to Petaluma. But it survived the Uber ride and firmed up in the freezer. Let them eat pie and ice cream!

#kvpsf Even though city traffic to the bridge could be brutal, I still enjoy driving over the Golden Gate Bridge as a passenger.

As a news producer, I covered the bridge when it was closed for bike races, marches, and accidents.
I remember two deers wandered onto the bridge and tied up rush hour traffic. Great chopper video of the animals running across the span.

“Oh deer!” - made into the headlines for one station.
I tried to convince our digital team to go with “D’oh! A Deer!” for a headline. It made them laugh but the suggestion didn’t go very far.

#kvptravel Hello Wine Country. I missed you. We drove up to Healdsburg to visit @wilsonofdrycreek. Sunny, mild weather followed us into Dry Creek Valley. We passed by vineyards flushed with green vines. Harvest season is just around the corner when vineyards pick grapes for their next bottling.

🌳 Trees shaded our patio seat with a lovely view of the vineyard. Our kids played on the steel coyote structure by @bryantedrickart. The 26-foot-tall structure was featured at Burning Man in 2013.

🍷 I enjoyed tasting the 2021 Carl’s Zinfandel. Also loved the the 2021 Sydney Reserve, which was aged in French Oak. Both bottles are blended with some Petite Sirah.

🌿 We learned another family owned the vineyards in the valley below Wilsons. The grapes planted in this field include chardonnay vines closer to the hill and pinot grigio vines planted near the trees along Dry Creek.

And it was such a pleasure to hang out on the deck with @sugareejones and @tash_hastings. Catching up, enjoying wine, and recovering from our night of tiki cocktails and dancing.

Who can ask for anything more?

According to the web site, a landlord converted the first floor of his boarding house into the Buena Vista Saloon in 1916. Fishermen and cannery workers dropped by for whiskey. The view of the bay helped them keep tabs on incoming fishing boats.
We also took this opportunity to have a Spanish lesson with my kid. He learned that Buena Vista translated to “Good View” in English.
In the 1950s, SF Chronicle columnist and travel writer Stanton Delaplane helped his local bar, the Buena Vista, mix its first Irish Coffee based on what he remembered from Shannon Airport.

☕ 🥃 It still tastes fantastic.

Table seating is first come, first serve and be willing to share. We met a Vacaville family on an SF layover to Mexico. It was fun to compare notes from our time in Vacaville and now.

My kid enjoyed the views of the cable cars at lunchtime. He liked the cheeseburger. He loved the fish and chips.

😋 I ordered the clam chowder bread bowl. My dad’s favorite.

#kvpsf My first day in San Francisco reintroduced my legs to the epic hills of this city by the bay. I climbed up one to explore Chinatown and its murals. @twickicp painted this Buddha mural at Grant and Clay in 2023.

I waved to Cafe Zoetrope at Kearny and Columbus. When I used to work in college radio, I snagged a couple of invites to a launch party. Cafe workers took us downstairs where Francis Ford Coppola used to store film canisters and screen movies. I saw film canisters labled with Apocalypse Now and the Godfather series.

Then, I met up with my fabulous friend @annemakovec. We met at a Sacramento station, and later, she gave me a tip about a producing job for weekend morning news at the CBS station in San Francisco. She’s one of the best anchors I have ever worked with, the definition of grace under pressure with breaking news. She has a big heart that wants to see shelter animals find their forever homes. My students enjoyed learning about her home studio set-up when she dropped by Zoom as a guest speaker for our news producing class. I’m grateful for the chance to catch up with her on this trip. And I can’t wait to see more of her travel adventures.

Next - I swung by Fisherman’s Wharf. I wanted to show my kid where his dad proposed. After the proposal, he told me he had to make sure I was on the opposite side of his hip pocket that held the ring box, while we walked around for dinner. 15 years ago, on the small beach next to the Maritime Museum, he got down on one knee and popped the question. 15 years later, we’re taking selfies on the beach and watching people swim next to the boats in the San Francisco Bay.

#kvpsf I hopped on my first BART ride in years. I finally downloaded the Clipper app on my phone and stepped onto a Richmond-bound train at the Millbrae station.

So many memories of BART stops that brought me closer to memories of meals, friends, and work.
Like the time we hopped off the Glen Park stop for delicious pizza at
Gialina Pizzeria. While we waited for pizza at a window seat, we watched drivers attempting to parallel park in front. They gave up after a few minutes of backing up and pulling out.

There were plenty of times I hopped off at the Daly Center station after finishing a graveyard shift for the morning show. My hubby and I would have a late dinner in Little Italy, and then he would drop me off at the station. After my show, I walked to the BART station and headed home.

And there’s the other time I hopped off at 24th and Mission to meet up with my best friend from college for her bachelorette party.

As an undergrad, I would take care of Christmas shopping at the Powell Station.

During my first semester at Berkeley, my friend took me to the Civic Center/UN Plaza stop and we caught a street car to take us up to Castro Street. He needed to watch Hitchcock’s Vertigo for class, which was playing at the Castro Movie Theater. This is the first time I fell in love with Hitchcock’s romantic thriller, where Jimmy Stewarts stalked/investigated Kim Novak as she wandered through the Mission, Legion of Honor Art Museum, and dives into Bay, with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

And the time I hopped off at Montgomery station for a job interview after traveling under the Bay Bridge through the Transbay Tube. I just found out the BART system was under a tsunami warning after the earthquake in Japan - and officials were worried about what could happen to that underwater tunnel.
I got the job.

I finally stopped at Montgomery station this weekend to catch up with a newsroom colleague.

#kvpsf I wandered down Grant Street in Chinatown before Labor Day crowds took over. It’s been a while since my last visit, and the murals are new to me.

🐉🦅 A dragon and eagle flank this Lady Liberty mural at Grant and California. @lukedragon.art produced this art work and more for Chinatown. He created a really cool Bruce Lee mural at Eastern Bakery on Grant at Commercial. There’s also the Tiger Dragon on the other side of thr street.
