#kvpaz When I heard the karaoke machine fired up inside the Saigon Center in Chandler, I knew we found the Filipino Festival Arizona. It was another hot weekend, and I’m grateful that most of the festival was indoors.

We picked up tasty lunch dishes from @tambayanatjoanns.
🐷 My hubby enjoyed the pork adobo bowl.
🐽 I loved my sisig and rice bowl. My kid loaded up on lumpia and gyoza.

The stage featured Philippines trivia, singing, and dance numbers, like binasuan.

There was also a fashion show with the @milliondollardiamondpageant.

#kvpaz Pizza and painting for my kid’s 8th birthday party this weekend. I am so grateful to @pinotspalettegilbert for hosting our party. We picked up pizza from Costco, an adorable bee and flowers cupcake from Walmart, and meat/cheese and fruit plates from Sprouts. 🐝🎂

🎨 Grace was a fantastic teacher for the kids - so patient with the young artists and me. My kid adored the strawberry lemonade. Parents had a choice of mocktails or adult drinks.

🎨The kids were inspired by the studio and all the art inside. The parents were impressed by what kids could do as Grace explained techniques, like blending colors and using white paint to create stars. I was thrilled to see all their different art creations stamped with their personalities.

🖼️ We had fun. A lovely afternoon of art, food, and making friends laugh.

#kvpaz I met Elvis last weekend at the Chandler Nature Center (@chandlerrec). I love that it’s open on a Sunday morning, which allows my kid to explore the critters and plants of the Arizona desert before our Buffalo watch party, just down the street.

Elvis is a king desert snake that can not only survive rattlesnake venom, but can also enjoy a rattlesnake for dinner.

#kvpkitchen Pancit is for fiestas - parties and gatherings where the joy, sorrow, gossip, frustration, intergenerational trauma, inside jokes, and other nuggets of Filipino family life intersect over a meal that will deliver baon and leftovers for days. One of my favorite dishes for a party is pancit palabok.

My family backed away from a disappointing sports weekend (except for @sundevilfb. Go #SunDevils!) and focused on Sunday night dinner with pancit palabok. Food soothe the soul. Comfort food is like a hug in your belly.

I used @angela.dimayuga recipe from her book Filipinx.

This pancit needs time. You need enough time to poach the chicken and patience to let the chicken gravy simmer. Multitasking helps because you can get a lot of prep work done - chopping scallions, onions, and celery or boiling eggs - while chicken and noodles cook on the stove.

My kid helped ground up annatto seeds into a fine powder and chopping vegetables. I tagged team with my husband on the chicken - poaching, shredding, and eventually frying up that skin for another chicharrón layer. Yes - we bought a bag of pork chicharrón. You can never have too much chicharrón.

🪄My kid is into magic and he finds magic in cookbooks. They remind of potion books. He’s been reading our Filipinx and I am Filipino cookbooks, dreaming about sweet treats to make in our kitchen.

#kvpaz Last February, my first grader worked on a group research project about the American flag. He did all of the talking for this group’s presentation. His group learned that Betsy Ross made the first flag and that it was a symbol of freedom and justice.
His mommy was also studying the American flag as part of the Arizona Youth Identity Project. I joined the research study in Summer 2021, interviewing participants about their identities, COVID-19, and the first 100 days of President Biden’s work and administration.

I worked with @dr.emirestrada and analyzed 144 photovoice submissions and interview data for these prompts:
What does it mean to be American?
Show something that represents acting American.
Show something that makes you feel like an outsider.

Many participants shared images of the American flag, voting stickers, and modified flags. Some participants reacted differently to the American flag, especially after the 2016 presidential election and the January 6 insurrection.

This analysis led to conference presentations. Then, our research group worked on revising those presentations into a journal article.

🍚🦪 For our appetizers: hubby went for the voodoo fried rice with shrimp, chicken, gochujang and peas. I had three Sweet Jesus oysters.

🐟🍤 I loved my Sea of Cortez shrimp scampi risotto. Hubby had the fresh fish of te day - fried John Dory.

🍦 We ended with scoops fo gelato - vanilla and pistachio. They served it with a chewy chocolate chip cookie.

She talked about work in understanding why so many people can’t afford the American dream.

“And what I learned is that our collective economic progress was being held back by a lie. The lie of the zero sum story. It’s a story that says that there’s a fixed pie of wellbeing, and if I get a bigger slice, you must get a smaller slice.”

She goes on to say why race plays a role in this narrative: “because white Americans are far more likely to view the world through that zero sum lens than Americans of color.”

#kvpsf Throwback to a few more scenes from our Bay Area trip. I loved being back in the Bay Area for a @sfgiants game. Oracle Park is one of my favorite ballparks - right by the Bay and decent food.

I finally visited the Coco Cola slide with my kid. There was a line, but eventually, my kid enjoyed going down the slide.

On our last morning, we stopped by Bayside Cafe in Sausalito for breakfast. My kid and I also checked out the adorable houseboats.

🍳 My hubby had a tasty Salmon Benedict.

🍞 My kid enjoyed his French toast.

🎣 I had a yummy Philly Omelet with salmon and cream cheese.
